Why the excavation decides the program
Excavation is the half of a retaining wall job that nobody sees once it is finished, and it is the half that decides whether the rest of the program holds. Get the levels wrong, hit rock without the gear to deal with it, or find there is nowhere to put the spoil, and every trade behind you moves.
We run the plant ourselves rather than hiring it in. That means the excavator, the hydraulic hammer and the rock augers are on site when the ground turns out to be harder than the soil report suggested, instead of a fortnight away. Because we also build the retaining walls that hold these cuts, the dig is planned around the structure from the first set out rather than handed over and hoped for.
Registered building practitioner CDB U 58737. Where the excavation supports a wall, that wall is designed and built to AS 4678, the Australian Standard for earth retaining structures, which sets out how the loads on a wall are calculated and how it has to be drained.
